So, late the other night, in a fit of combined whimsy and frustration, I did a thing.

I do not plan on posting anything! I'm just using it to read people whom I cannot read at DW, or who post much more content on Tumblr than on DW. Plus, having a username means I can finally contact Tumblrites who don't have anonymous asks enabled.

Expect much panic, because this platform confuses me greatly. You don't even want to know how long it took me to figure out how to put an icon on there! And I still don't know how to make a profile/about-me/whatever you call it... I settled for a text post, as a placeholder.

My tumblr use is approximately:

* Set up DW feeds for the tumblrs of my little fish and a few significant others
* subscribe to everyone I know, more or less
* enqueue shiny stuff from little fish & various others
* occasionally at Poor Decision O'Clock, visit tumblr itself and go on a reblogging/enqueueing spree

It is possible to use it, after some getting used to it. Instructions on how to set up an "About Me" page:

1. Click the head-and-shoulders thing on the top right
2. Under "Tumblrs/serpentinekraith", click on "Edit appearance"
3. Scroll down a bit and click on the "Edit theme" button next to "Website theme"
4. On the bar on the left, scroll down and click "+ Add a page" (second-last option)
5. Make the page!

Tumblr's interface is so nonintuitive. (I'm there with the same username; I reblog somewhere between occasionally and a lot.)

Ahahaha, another tumblr holdout gives in...;) I'm elaineofshalott there too. The interface does take some getting used to. Once you do learn to use it, though, it becomes an awful timesink. :p These days I mostly use it when I'm painting my nails--I'll scroll through while I'm waiting for each coat of polish to dry.

Shhhh, I'm still holding out! I'm not posting anything there! :D

It's mostly a placeholder and a way to send the occasional ask. Half the time, when I go look at the Tumblrs I've been reading for months, I don't even bother to log in. I mostly have it because of cypher and ciceqi and askerian, who are technically on DW but seem to post a lot more over on Tumblr; this way I can more easily see what they're doing. (Theoretically. Like I said, at least two of them I've been reading on Tumblr for months without having an account of my own, so we'll see if having an account makes much of a difference to me.)

Currently the only thing I could really see myself using it for is photo hosting, should I suddenly sprout insane amounts of talent in the fanart department (unlikely) or otherwise need to post pictures for something.

I'm 100% doing this for fandom, and particularly an odd combo of older and brand-new fandoms (Fullmetal Alchemist, Homestuck, MCU) that seem harder to find activity for on DW. And honestly I'm not using it much despite having created it anyway! I'm finding it easier to just keep on checking people out the old-fashioned way, i.e. by keeping their Tumblrs in a bookmarks folder and clicking on them sequentially.

Honestly? Half the time I still check various fandom tumblrs manually!

DW has spoiled me; without a convenient login window in the top of each page, I'm too lazy to go through the pain of clicking on Tumblr's icon (and leaving whatever I'm looking at!) and then logging in.

So far I'm unimpressed by the results when I do log in, too. It seems less organised than a DW reading page, and harder to follow who's posting what. (Though part of that may be my newness and the lack of a satisfactory layout - I have had the same DW layout for ages, and am really fond of the way it sets up reading page entries! I've experimented with a bare half-dozen Tumblr layouts so far, and haven't been completely in love with any of them... I even caught myself thinking about whether it'd be possible to find someone to create a layout that mimics my DW!)

I've been wondering how people keep track of that - checking a tumblr manually, it's hard enough to be aware of whether something is an original post or merely a reblog.
