I wish everyone a happy holiday and a very merry Yuletide! I haven't had a chance to browse any of the fics yet, but it's something I'm looking forward to when I do have a few hours to spare. If you participated, may your fic be delicious and your recipient be quick to comment. :D

I'm running late with just about everything this year, due mostly to external factors beyond my control (foster kittens stayed long, got sick, spent half of today without power) but I had a lovely Christmas and my annual holiday cards & tea post will happen! I'll try to toss up the poll in the next couple days.

Lots of Yuletide letters and letters-to-be on my flist! I'm not participating this year, but I love seeing the exchange get geared up, and I have a lot of fun reading people's letters for fandoms I know.

Yuletide has been part of my fandom experience for so long that I look forward to it every year, even though I've only participated twice; it's a pleasure just to see it carrying on for another year. ♥

A while ago, [personal profile] kass gave me five questions to answer, and I'm finally getting around to them! Not necessarily in order.

4. What is your favorite thing about this time of year where you live?

The short answer to this question is - not much!

Any temperature below 60 degrees F is too cold for me, and more than 10 inches of Water From The Sky per year is excessive by my measure. (I'm a desert native, is it obvious?) I hate being cold, and I hate being precipitated upon; fall/winter in my locale is pretty much six months of exactly that. I spend pretty much all of it complaining about my house's lack of insulation and my heating bill, and not wanting to get up in the mornings because it's dark.

The primary upsides are Christmas and cats.

Christmas foods, Christmas presents, and Christmas decorations are things I enjoy, in various degrees. Even Christmas music can be nice. (Horrible pop-music renditions of secular Christmas or "Christmas" songs in shops, however, are a plague.) On the fannish side, there's Yuletide, and my annual tea mailing/card exchange! I really miss the days of LJ's holiday wishlist comm, too; every year I find myself wondering if I could track down whomever created it and take it over, or just start another one. It was such a wonderful part of the season!

Cats are the other upside to the season: when it's cold in the house, the cats get cuddly. :D I've spent the last two nights with them draped over my legs on the sofa, whereas during the warmer months they tend to spend the evenings in their armchair instead of atop me.

(This reminds me: I need to make a cats post!)

My skull is bubbling over with ideas for my Yuletide story!

However, so far my actual progress is so nonexistent that I don't even have a blank Word document to show for all my grey matter's seethings.

Why the disconnect, brain and fingers? This is what we call Very Not Good, with the deadline only four days away!

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing for me! This is only my second year doing Yuletide, but last year I was completely amazed by the awesomeness of the whole thing, so I suspect I'm firmly hooked! Anything you write for my beloved but neglected fandoms will be an awesome and happymaking experience for me.

Below the cuts, you can find more details (which are, of course, optional!) both for my overall tastes and by fandom.

Basic squicks and bonuses )

REQUEST 1: Discworld; Vimes, Vetinari, Angua, Moist )

REQUEST 2: Lord John Grey Series; John Grey, Stephan von Namtzen, Percy Wainwright. )

REQUEST 3: Chanur Series; Chur, Vikktakkht, Hilfy. )

Yaaaaay!

I had to think of something positive to post about, because what I first wanted to post was a crotchety-old-fangirl complaint about MPreg... but even through my crotchetiness I could recognise that that's not how I want to start off a new year.

I will also refrain from discussion of how a Pottersues thread just made me seriously question my positions on parental authority and What Children Read. (That will take more thinking-over.)

So! Positive things!

I am still trying to get through all the things I bookmarked from Yuletide, so my fic cup runneth over. :D

In RL I am frantically busy trying to wrap up a thousand things, so I haven't had much time for fannishness, but I'm more-than-halfway resolved that this year I will up the number of Fics I Have Written to a nice, even 10. Staring at that ugly "7" on my AO3 dashboard is just unpleasant. *makes face* I spend way too much time staring at my AO3 page. Way back when I was a bitty, isolated fan just discovering fic, I never dreamt that I would actually write any! Much less that I would write a Yuletide fic and get comments! I now understand other writers's love of comments more than I used to, though I think (hope) I'm still not quite as obsessive as some get...

Actually, I think I'm pretty unlikely to get out of hand, given I haven't even posted about the Yuletide fic I wrote. :D I meant to! *sheepish* If you're interested, go here and then go read -- that first link is almost the entirety of the canon, so it's not hard to get into. (However, there's lots more amazing stuff by this fabulous artist, and I tried to incorporate some of it in the fic but even if I failed you should check her out!)

Let's see, can I think of anything else?

Nope, I think that's it for this post. :D

So... I'm seriously thinking of signing up for Yuletide this year. I've been yearning for some kind of writing challenge that appeals to me (my vanity, let me show you it: I go and stare at my AO3 page and wince at the tiny list of "fandoms" at the top), and 1,000 words does not feel insurmountable.

It also seems like it might be a handy way to combat AND feed my recent cravings for fandoms-so-small-they're dead. (While all of you guys are off raving about "Sherlock" and "White Collar" or whatever's on telly these days, I keep haunting the Interwebz for more Dragaera or Foreigner fanfic, with little to show for my diligence...)

Anyone out there want to talk me out of it? Or pat me reassuringly? (I'm just a teensy bit doubtful of my own abilities, especially as regards "coming up with a plot" and "including all the required characters". Just a tad.)
