krait: Youji and Aya from Weiss Kreuz (Youji and Aya)
I started a casual rewatch of Weiß Kreuz back in December, and today I finished the original arc... and began WK Glühen.

Man, I'm reminded of how the usual fan advice to newbies is "Love yourself and don't watch Glühen." Before HP fandom existed to give us EWE (Epilogue? What Epilogue?) - and before fic sites had a tags section to put it in - WK fans were cheerfully ignoring Glühen so hard that 'Glühen didn't happen' was all you needed to say to establish your AU.

The best reason to watch Glühen is so that, in future, you can remember not to watch Glühen.

Tongue-in-cheek aside, the original WK is such a nostalgia trip for me! Every time I rewatch it, it strikes me again how it shouldn't have the emotional power it does. It's a vanity project anime made by a band, it has a silly premise and ridiculous plots, and the animation quality is rough, but the characters are compelling; it's like all the work that didn't go into the other stuff was put into them, to the benefit of all the rest. They may be melodramatic prettyboys, but they feel like real people and like a group, not just a handful of OCs tossed together with no connection.

My favourites are Aya & Youji (separately, together, and *ahem* together), but Omi tends to steal my affections when I hit his arc. When the whumphammer comes for Omi, it comes hard! Everybody gets their turn under the mallet, but Omi's suffering is especially harsh, and I love him for it.

There's no particular point to this post, but if you've seen Weiß Kreuz, chime in and tell me your faves!

How is it that it seems like forever since my last post, and yet somehow when I look at my DW I have an immediate, "It can't have been that long!" reaction to the last post date. Oy.

My fannish life seems to be something of a muddle right now, as I'm flitting through fics in various small/old fandoms (Weiss Kreuz, Silmarillion, Nirvana in Fire, Witcher. I've picked up the first manga volumes of FAKE, and they've been making for good lunch-break reading: fluffy and about as realistic as a Disney movie, but entertaining and easy to consume in 30-minute bursts without losing plot threads.

The last few days have given me a temptation to poke my nose into Mo Dao Zu Shi (Modao Zushi?); I've seen some things that make me think I'd like it after all, though my initial impression - back when it first became a thing - wasn't favourable. Given that it seems to exist in two dozen different forms, though, it may take me a while to figure out how to approach it if I do decide to take the plunge; right now, the webnovel and the animated version are what I'm leaning toward. If you're a fan, suggestions and pointers would be welcome! Be sure to check out these beautiful icons by [community profile] yeonmo, too. /driveby rec

Outside of fandom, I've been rereading some Georgette Heyer romances (The Convenient Marriage, The Grand Sophy, & Devil's Cub so far). Yesterday I finally got around to the long-overdue vacuuming, but did not accomplish any of the other major household tasks I need to do. (Sigh.) For a while I had some genuine Real-Life excuses, but those are wearing rather thin, and I'm once again faced with the fact that, in fact, I actually just really hate doing laundry. *guilty* It may be time to look at my accrued PTO and take a day off for Dumb Domestic Stuff That Needs Doing. First I should probably make a list of said tasks, though, or I'll forget half of them when I do have time! :D

I've been silent for quite a while, sorry!

Real life things have kept me busy but I'm reading a lot, at least; both fic and novels. Got through Penric's Progress (Bujold), War of the Spider Queen II: Dissolution (Byers), and have almost finished Road of the Patriarch (Salvatore) lately. Have also gone to a small local(ish) convention, had my upstairs floors replaced, made an appointment to get my vehicle looked at (though not till Saturday) and mostly put everything back in the upstairs rooms. Okay, that last one's a lie, because there are still four large boxes, two bookshelves, an armchair, and a microwave sitting here in the living room with me, but still. Progress has been made. :D

On the fanfic front it's been a lot of Forgotten Realms, Weiss Kreuz, and Silmarillion fic, with a dash of Witcher and Original Works. :D This week is probably going to be as busy as the last couple, but I should start planning a recs post of some kind, or else I'll end up having another months-long DW gap without even noticing.

I also need to make some kind of food to eat, because otherwise it's going to become Every Dinner Is Frozen Pizza Week by default. (Which would at least free up some freezer space...)

Let's see, anything else? I'm well, the cats are well, although Youngest Cat shattered a very expensive collectible item yesterday morning and has been served notice that this is unacceptable, and I have Double Chocolate Wafer Bites to eat after lunch tomorrow, so things could be worse. :D

I keep meaning to post, but there's not a lot going on in my life, fannishly speaking. It's more 'nebulous plans' than 'actual activity.'

I have been reading a bit of Homestuck fic, for whatever reason; a sudden nostalgia trip that came out of nowhere, but it's been fun. What a huge and creative and wonderful fandom that was, overall, and a delightful experience. ♥

Beyond that, I just finished a rewatch of Weiss Kreuz, and I really need to get back to my Nirvana in Fire rewatch plans, and I keep toying with the idea of trying an actual Cnovel at some point, and my brain is still full of Horrible Murder Elves (aka Silmarillion) thoughts that I either can't find fic for, can't write fic for, or just want more fic for.

I've also been doing some gardening - bought some strawberry plants and some flowers, including a Songbird Blue Columbine that I absolutely couldn't resist; I hope it thrives! My love of weird alien plants is delighted by its blue tentacularity. :D

[personal profile] kass gave me five questions to answer, and I'm finally getting around to them! Out of order, but answering them. :)

3. What fandoms are bringing you the most joy right now?

Icon very relevant. :D

This last month or so, I've been revisiting lots of old anime fandoms. Not sure why - just fell into it, I guess! So there's been much reviewing of nostalgic favourites (Weiss Kreuz, anyone? Tell me your favourite assassin!), and browsing fanfic, and in some cases lamenting the lack of fanfic.

Old series I've been into lately: Weiss Kreuz, Yami no Matsuei, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star.

Newer series: Skullface Bookseller Honda-San, Princess Jellyfish.

Rambling about anime below the cut! )

...Anyway!

Those have been some of the highlights of my recent fandom nostalgia trip, and now I really ought to make some rec posts for some of them! *adds it to the to-do list*
