Today's theme is Acting the Fool.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Sometimes even the smartest characters can make a really dumb mistake or behave like a complete idiot. Sometimes even the most serious characters can have a moment of playful silliness. Show us a moment that a character may not have been at her most sensible (whatever that may be for her).

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list in the pinned post at the top of the page. Please don't post until that day.

First book: Adventure in Zanskar by Amy Edelstein, a travel memoir with a heavy Buddhist spirituality slant, about a 20-something hiking a mountain range in far-north India in the 1980s.

I actually really enjoyed reading this; I generally enjoy travel memoirs of women doing adventurous things PLUS I love travel memoirs that take place before cell phones. That, plus the author really had a great time on her trip and loved meeting local people, and the introspection stuff that's typical of a 20-something trying to figure out what to do with her life wasn't as annoying as it might've been because it was tempered with Buddhist philosophies.

Downside is she falls heavily into the "things are so much better for this primitive uneducated society because they don't have technology or money" mindset which is very surface-level, tbh. Maybe they're truly happy, maybe they're just showing you, an outsider, a positive face.

Second book: Peregrinations of a Pariah by Flora Tristan, translated by Jean Hawkes, another travel memoir but this time from the 1800s. It's basically about a French woman traveling to Peru to try and get some family inheritance, and then getting caught in a civil war.

She's an excellent writer (and the translator did a great job) but she definitely has the old-school traveler mindset of "everything but my home country is horrible"-- she hates the food, the people, the location, etc. Her personality is quite funny, though; she kept saying she could run the country if only she could find the right man to partner with, but she couldn't even convince her miserly uncle to part with any money for the 9+ months she lived with him. Ha!

Civil war coverage was a slog and took up a good 1/3 of the book-- which was edited down even more from the original, actually-- and while it was interesting to read about 1800s Peru the fact that the author hated nearly everything about it made for rough reading. I WOULD read her other books, though, one of which is about traveling to England (The London Journal of Flora Tristan, 1842) and another about labor reform in France (not sure if this was translated into English).

Name: sewagelag00n. Sewa for short.

Age: 20

I mostly post about: My daily life, some stuff about my hexperiences regarding "mental health"/Madness. Occasionally I'll talk about media I've been into.

My hobbies are: Selfshipping! DIY alternative fashion, customizing clothes & making jewelry. Ballet. Writing & art. Doll collecting. Soft toys.

My fandoms are: Some Sword/Some Play (18+)! A very obscure little game that I love so much I've basically adopted one of the characters as my OC. Please I am so abnormal about these lesbians. Longtime Vocaloid fan, I think I'm coming up on 9 years now. I love Hatsune Miku (she's literally me) and recently Teto SynthV has captured my heart. Recently got back into FNaF (my favorite is Mangle!). Very normal about Neon Genesis Evangelion. Huge music nerd: love digital hardcore like Ada Rook, but also into stuff under the goth umbrella, industrial, shoegaze, new wave... I like a little bit of everything. I also love Emilie Autumn, Machine Girl, Nashimoto Ui, Chelsea Wolfe, and femtanyl.

I'm looking to meet people who: Honestly, just looking for more interaction. People who post regularly and will comment on my posts.

My posting schedule tends to be: Every couple of days, but sometimes I take a week off.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Those who follow Abrahamic religions. I am a staunch antitheist. I do have religious friends, I don’t blanket hate all religious people, but it is a turnoff. I am more receptive to other religious/spiritual people. Transmisogynists, racists, sanists, homophobes, other bigots.

Before adding me, you should know: My blog is very much 18+ and viewer discretion advised because I am into a lot of dark and sexual things. I am Mad and hexperience things like plurality (one of my alters sometimes posts on this account too) and self-harm and intense mood swings. I am very critical of the psychiatric system. I am polyamorous and have 3 real-life partners and a whole host of fictional ones.

Tragic....

* I realized that the fictional hockey team name in this original fic would not work. Klickitat Cats is an amazing sounding name, a Portland reference and a cryptid reference. But the street/region name comes from a local tribe and no way would a Portland team would overlook that and use the name that way unless they were themselves Klickitat.

Poly-b-us would be an amazing pun name for a local team, but the amount of Portland brain rot you'd need to fully get it is too much. Like, a team would use the name but the layers would be lost on readers. (Could use it as a one-off background joke, though. Also, Oregon is the Beaver State so I'm surprised none of our IRL recc league teams haven't snagged Beaver Skate)

* Guess who walked 2.6 miles for a PDXWLF exhibit that turned out to not be there? Yup, that's our PDXWLF. I think I am going to hit one more location, one that I am hopeful for, and call it good for this year.

* Heated Rivalry related link - This is a really good breakdown as to how Shane and Ilya being in the same division effects them and the story.

Good timezone, everybody! I come with two announcements!

First, we've opened up requests for treating! You can check out that list right over here.

Second, we are now two weeks from the deadline on February 23 (anywhere in the world)!

If you haven't posted yet, now's a great time to check out our Posting Guide here or our Embed Guide here. And if you’re not sure how it's going, or have some concerns, you have options!

Extension. If you’re sure you can complete your assignment, you just need a little more time, this option is for you. To request an extension, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

The backup protocol. This option is for people who’re not sure whether they can complete their assignment, but who really really want to. A backup is a pinch hitter assigned ahead of time. If you complete your assignment, that’s great! Aaaaand there’s a chance of treats. If you don’t complete your assignment, you can call it off at the last minute - while your pinch hitter had had a much longer time to prepare. To request a backup, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

Partial default. This option is for people who already know they can’t complete their assignment, but who want to post what they can complete. To request a partial default, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com.

Full default. If you’re absolutely sure you can’t complete your assignment, this option is for you. You can activate it by email purim_gifts@yahoo.com, or by hitting the “Default” button at the AO3. Either way, you won’t be penalized for it; life happens, and we get that.

And if you’re not sure which of those options is right for you, please email purim_gifts@yahoo.com! The mod team's here to help, and we'd much rather do that as early as possible.

Because having wondered what the Tangent Online 2025 recommended reading list looked like--or more accurately, how many non-recommended reading list words would precede it, nothing compelled me to go look.

1. Got my teeth cleaned today and since Carla was awake before my appointment (which was at 8:30am), she was able to drop me off so I could just walk home. The dentist is a good walking distance away, but with my appointment being on the early side, I wouldn't have had time to cool off once I arrived, and I didn't want to risk being hot and/or sweaty and having to get right in the chair. But I did get a nice walk on the way home, though, and it was fully overcast, which is definitely my preference for walks.

2. Since the dentist appointment was a good excuse and I didn't really have a pressing reason to go into the office, I just worked from home today. I think I'll have to go in every day the rest of the week, so it was nice to stay home today.

3. I love these sunny window shots!

There were indeed a lot of American Robins in Wildcat Canyon this morning.:) U reported seventy, and there seemed like that many Lesser Goldfinches, given how much chatter and song we heard. I missed the Townsend's Warbler and a White-throate Sparrow that U and Chris saw on Upper Packrat but heard a Pacific Wren and heard/saw two Allen's Hummingbirds that they did not. The second Allen's was feeding on and defending a big ribes that we've always checked out when walking the upper trail, but he wasn't visible when they went by. The list: )

A pair of Mallards flew in, landing on Jewel Lake with two quiet splashes while I was sitting on the bench waiting for U and Chris, so that was convenient.

I gambled that my authors would read their email and respond within a few days and held off on the On the Shelf podcast until I could include the announcement. Offers went out on the 6th, the podcast would normally have gone up on the 7th. As of this morning I still had one acceptance yet to come in, but I'd scripted the show and decided to go ahead and record. Then the final acceptance came in just as I was setting up the mic. (I wouldn't have uploaded the episode until everything was final, but it was unlikely I'd have to change the script.)

Once again, I'm pledging myself to get ahead of the game. I'll send out payments tomorrow and any suggested edits by the end of the week, along with requests for bios and pronunciation guides. I'll be doing all the narration myself this year. So I have half a chance of actually getting everything recorded well in advance. (But only half a chance, because inevitably I get distracted by something else, thinking, "Well, I have plenty of time.")

I bought five stories again this time, due to some short lengths, though I'm not sure whether I'll do a double-episode or use one as a special bonus fiction episode at some point. The podcast is having its 10th anniversary this year, which might make a natural context for that.
