When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

I wanted to work for the Peace Corps. That’s all I could think about in High School. I didn’t realize it was like camping, which I don’t do. I realized I don’t like roughing it in the wild. Hubby and I got married very young and started our family. So, instead of PC, I got a job at obgyn office and loved it. I was disappointed in myself for a few years. But I learned to live with my decision. 😁

Every year hubby would ask me if I wanted to go camping. I gave him a look that said ‘I’ll kill you first’. The look always made him laugh. I would even laugh afterwards. When we were in our 50s, we rented a very nice travel trailer. It was okay but still don’t want to camp.

About a week or so ago, I reviewed Sonic Rumble. Partly because I had been playing it for so long and genuinely liked the game, partly because I thought much of the critique was misinformed, as well as to bring forth what I thought was an issue underrepresented in reviews.

It was a balanced review that pointed out things I enjoyed as well as critiquing multiplayer issues. (It is difficult to accept a party invite if you are not in the app, making it harder to earn Red Star Rings.)

And this was greeting me in my mailbox just a day or so later!

A message from the developers apologizing for any issues, and offering a consolatory 10 skin fragments.

Ten Omni Fragments and a nice message! (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)

This wasn’t any kind of existing promotion, I was just giving my honest thoughts of my own volition.

They also left a response to my main review in the Play Store. I'm very encouraged, as they seem very conscientious in monitoring player critique. I have not had a lot of time to play the game in the meantime (or test to see if they fixed the multiplayer difficulties) But it does make me optimistic for what is yet to come.

So many WIPs - I never used to read the damn things, but HR has corrupted me! The advantage of having several WIPs on the go is that something updates every day, often more than one. The main downside is remembering which plot or AU storyline the WIP is about. I often reread the last chapter, esp. if it's a few days since the fic updated.

I know where to draw the line by magneticwave (wrote the great AU where Shane's a surgeon). It's a new WIP (10,000 word 1st chapter) and is really excellent, with a mature 26 y.o. Shane with a trick knee who's in the Metros with 22 y.o. hotshot Ilya. Lots of hockey detail, great writing & characterisations, a closeted oblivious Shane, and Ilya on the prowl.

My two other main fave WIPs are Basingstoke's Lovers, or English is a damn funny language which continues to be brilliant, and Glittercity's Never Been Bitten, the vampire AU with interesting power dynamics (rich obsessive club owner vampire Shane who's nervous of the ingenuity and aggression of humans and Ilya, the chaotic bartender who's trying to seduce him.)

I've also been charging through all CorvidCordelia's works.

I read Half Agony, Half Hope a while back - it's a longfic based on the premise that Ilya gets traded to Montreal about 3 years after Shane breaks it off after the tuna melts hookup, so they're now on the same team. A great mix of angst, drama, lust, and of course, the requisite happy ending!

Careful Fear and Dead Devotion is another longfic, a complete AU in which Shane and Ilya are young actors looking for a break who are cast as Finn and Dane in the TV series "Ember and Ice". It uses the Quinn audio-erotic story as the plot of the drama they're starring in, so if the mention of Ember and Ice as a "fandom" put you off, don't be - no knowledge is needed of E&I and the inherent ludicrousness of that work doesn't intrude. Scott and Kip are the showrunners! It's kind of analogous to Hudson and Connor in HR, without being in any way RPF. It's a great story, and I loved it.

And Walking Through Windows a fork in the road AU where Ilya fucks up the Tampa All Stars reconciliation (after Shane accepts he's gay), and they then only see each other on the ice when their teams play, for ten years. Which is inherently very sad, but the story starts then, when they're both recently retired and Ilya learns that Shane's about to marry a man. You can imagine what happens, and I was unsure if I'd like it as I dislike partner betrayal, but CorvidCordelia is a bloody good writer and absolutely sold it to me, with a wonderful story that I couldn't put down (gave myself eyestrain again, damn it!)

1. After much back and forth about it, it's finally settled that I will be going up north to help the new store for a few days, and the dates are set (next Wednesday through Friday). I would prefer not to go at all but I'm glad it's at least sorted, and I am curious to see the new store.

2. We went down to DCA for dinner tonight and had some very tasty lunar new year foods.

3. It's been fairly cool all day today and by the time we got home from Disney it was really windy and cold. It's supposed to tonight and maybe a little tomorrow. Hopefully it's all just overnight and not anything that will interfere with going out of the house tomorrow.

4. Jasper!

Duolingo just added B1 to the Chinese course.

It took me 22 minutes from start to finish.

Pretty sure I won't finish legendary before the B2 release in April (B1 had 499 units), but I'll definitely be terrible at the matching game for a while yet.

I am possibly done with PDXWLF. I ventured out to a specific spot tonight because I recognized the address and was confident they'd deliver. I'll do a photo post... actually right now:

The CD clad house. Yeah, I know this intersection. I know it would be worth the trip.

I went out early, thinking to grab a burrito and then meander/photowalk a mile to two towards it. Burrito, portable food, right? Yeah, the lady who made mine was maybe new and needed to wrap it in multiple layers of foil for it to hold together, and she blamed me for it being a mess because I didn't order rice in it. So, I basically wound up walking around eating a pile of food and soaked tortilla in a make-shift tin foil bowl. It was okay. (Honestly, I shouldn't have paid for for that mess, but there was only one place I could get food along my planned route. I just really need to stop relying on being able to grab food while out and about, it keeps going sideways.)

We went down to DCA for dinner tonight. There's an after-hours event on the Disneyland side (Sweethearts Night) but that didn't seem to affect crowds at DCA at all, at least not as early as we were there.

I am hoping this is going to be recorded and available online, I assume it will be, but am hoping to confirm. Wow, that is going to be a conversation. This is a very often discussed book about the problems of hockey culture. Picking her to interview him is really interesting. (In my experience 'in conversation with' means the second person is basically doing an interview, and has been picked for being someone very well informed/related to a topic as opposed to being picked for interviewing skills)

WESLEY: The M.O. doesn’t match. Mesektet had some sort of energy sucked from her. He didn’t touch her heart.

Dear Father, it has been a month since my last confession.

I am so tired, y'all. I've been working overtime for the past three weeks trying to stash some money away for the inevitable basement bullshit and it's been exhausting. (You wouldn't think a job that requires sitting at a desk would be tiring, but I feel like somebody threw sand in my eyes by the end of the day.)

Permit-wrangler is still trying to find an engineer. Apparently the problem is that I can't just dig a hole and have an engineer look at it and yes the foundations are good, they have to figure out how to reverse-engineer whatever was done to create new drawings - and that's going to be expensive regardless.

I sicc'd permit-wrangler on the engineer who got the original permits. "Tell him if he helps me out I might leave him out of the lawsuit."

I looked out my window this morning and there was a huge raptor in the trees behind my house. Couldn't get a clear enough view to make a guess at what it was but at least twice the size of the red-tail hawks I normally see back there.

I reiterated to the venerable Lord Brock that no, he is not going outside no matter how much he bonks his head on the window. (He is enormously offended by the squirrels.)

Last time I visited my dad I took my laptop over and started quizzing him about family. His memory is shot, but he does remember incidents from his childhood. What's hilarious is that he remembers the kids who pissed him off - I suggested one possible connection and he was all, "Oh yeah, Joey, he visited from the States. What a little prick."

He also remembered the aunt who baked cookies and the heavy-drinking aunt who was a huge bruiser and all the men were afraid of her. So if they left an impression he had me stories about them, even if he doesn't remember how they're related to him.

Somebody here was talking about how Skip The Dishes made up a new address for them, and it reminded me that I had the exact experience last time I ordered from them. The system sent the driver to an address a couple of blocks away and I only caught it because I got the ping that the order was five minutes away and when I looked at the map I didn't recognize the streets.

Calling their customer service did nothing because the driver was already showing as "arrived". But as soon as I hung up I got a call from the driver because the address they had given him was a park, so I was able to redirect him and get my food after all.

We have reached the part of the winter where I start to worry that I have run out of places to put snow. My yard is maybe five feet square and the snow is already piled up in a pyramid.

I keep wanting to go out with a hose and ice it up and build an igloo or something.

Tuesday Top Five: Love Multiplied

With Valentine’s Day coming up at the end of the week, I decided to list my top five polyamorous ships across my various fandoms.

1. The Crew of Light aka the Polycula (Dracula)

When I was following Dracula Daily in 2022, I summed up the relationships between Stoker’s heroes as follows, more or less: “Lucy, her three boyfriends, her girlfriend Mina, Mina’s husband Jonathan, and… whatever Doctors Seward and Van Helsing have going on.”

2. Rose Tyler/Ninth Doctor/Jack Harkness (Doctor Who)

Each of the three characters and component pairings was fascinating and charming in their own way, and the trio clearly and believably cared for each other, and enjoyed their adventures together, within their relatively little shared screen time.

3. Kara Danvers/James Olsen/Winn Schott (Supergirl)

The connection between these three, as it developed over the first season of the CW’s Supergirl, was what inspired and me to coin the phrase “Team Triad.”

4. Poe Dameron/Rey/Finn (Star Wars)

I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Rise of Skywalker, but I did enjoy seeing Finn, Poe, and Rey go on an adventure together, and the group hug between them at the end.

5. Varice Kingsford/Numair Salmalín/Ozorne Muhassin Tasikhe (Tortall series)

The backstory in Tempests & Slaughter, in which Arram (later Numair) and Ozorne are best friends at mage school, makes the events of Emperor Mage at least ten times more tragic than it already was.
