I haven't read the novel, but I've gathered that yes, we get Fei Liu backstory. He was kidnapped by bad guys who were basically making kids into supersoldier martial artists via drugs (and evil martial-arts magic?) That's why he's so strong and fast but mentally handicapped. Dunno the exact details of Mei/the Alliance rescuing him, but they did, hence his devotion to Chief Mei.
I both want to write things and feel like I don't know enough about ancient china to get it right
Argh, yes, this is my dilemma, too! I want to write so many things - but I don't want to do historical and cultural research for a country whose language I'm completely at sea with.
(honestly I usually skip wips too, I'm just desperate for fic and that one was totally worth it)
That WIP was totally worth it! I have reread it about six times now; it's practically made out of my id, if there was a bit more pining!
There is more fox!Lin Chen out there. Sadly the other fox!Lin Chen fics aren't as awesome, but there is this one, which has a sequel that's not linked to it for some reason. I think I was mistaking the sequel for an 'inspired by' fic, because I'm not finding any other fox!fics and I know I read at least two!
