I am possibly done with PDXWLF. I ventured out to a specific spot tonight because I recognized the address and was confident they'd deliver. I'll do a photo post... actually right now:

The CD clad house. Yeah, I know this intersection. I know it would be worth the trip.

I went out early, thinking to grab a burrito and then meander/photowalk a mile to two towards it. Burrito, portable food, right? Yeah, the lady who made mine was maybe new and needed to wrap it in multiple layers of foil for it to hold together, and she blamed me for it being a mess because I didn't order rice in it. So, I basically wound up walking around eating a pile of food and soaked tortilla in a make-shift tin foil bowl. It was okay. (Honestly, I shouldn't have paid for for that mess, but there was only one place I could get food along my planned route. I just really need to stop relying on being able to grab food while out and about, it keeps going sideways.)

(You know the drill! You can ask here if you have a question you'd like answered!)

Favorite dessert to make?

Ha. So — I love to bake, but I am not really a Dessert Person. Like, there are specific desserts I like eating, but more often than not, I will just buy them because I apparently have fancy taste and my desires exceed my skills (or, you know, certain stuff is just annoying to make).

Anyway, all that to say, the list of desserts I have made and enjoyed making is pretty short, but we'll go ahead and run through it...

1). Chocolate Pie.

This is, as it sounds, chocolate pudding in a pie crust.

I don't like making pie crust, but pie crust that you make yourself at home is worlds better than anything you can buy frozen (alas!), and so I Suffer and Endure and Make It. :D

Chocolate Pie is Max's favorite and so I make it for him every Thanksgiving and sometimes for Christmas. These are the two occasions he knows it is safe to ask for chocolate pie.

2). Tiramisu.

It's not really baking, but! I have a solid method in my back pocket which does not involve raw eggs (eww), so.

Hard to go wrong with coffee, ladyfingers, and brandy (or rum) layered with whipped cream/marscapone and chocolate. Yum. I made one this year for Max's birthday and it was gone within about two days. :D

3). Macarons.

...I feel like someone is going to come out going WHAT at me, because I just said my desires exceed my skills, but!

Macarons are Just Okay. THERE, I SAID IT.

Anyway I wanted to prove to myself that I could make them, so I did. It ended up being surprisingly fun; they were not picture-perfect (I needed to whip my eggs more), but I am actually planning to make some apricot ones here in a couple of weeks and see if they work out better this time.

(I made blueberry and raspberry last time, per the request of the person I was making them for; they were Aggressively Fine, but if I'm doing jam, I want it to be strawberry or apricot. Certain People may laugh now.)

4). Danishes.

Again, this is one where I feel like people are going to go, what, but!

Laminated pastry is actually fun to make, though if I'm making puff pastry I prefer to use it for things like chicken pot pie or apple turnovers (which I don't add much sugar to, so I suppose they're borderline acceptable to eat for breakfast).

I made Danishes for my dad for Father's Day the last time I was out there for Father's Day, and the entire plate of them was gone within about thirty minutes. My brother-in-law ate, like, six. (They were, to be fair, not huge, but still!)

At some point in the next few weeks I am also planning to try my hand at making eclairs again, now that I've actually got the equipment for it (specifically, nice piping bags and such), so I guess that + the macarons will be it. Eclairs are probably the thing I buy most often at Safeway that makes me go, "ugh I do technically have the ability to do this but I'm lazy."

(To be fair to the Safeway nearest the house, though, their bakery is quite good. The eclairs I get there remind me of the ones I used to get from the bespoke bakery my mom's friend ran in Salt Lake, which is not something I can say of any other grocery store bakery I've gotten stuff from.)

Anyway.

Frequently, if it's Just Me And Max and it's not a special occasion but I want something dessert-y, it's cookies. I have a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe memorized and have had it memorized since I perfected it when I was, like, 10.

("Perfect" according to my grandfather, who was Very Picky about cookies, but I digress. I'm fond of it! I don't think it's to anyone else's taste, but Max likes to dip them in coffee, so.)

There you go. :D

We went down to DCA for dinner tonight. There's an after-hours event on the Disneyland side (Sweethearts Night) but that didn't seem to affect crowds at DCA at all, at least not as early as we were there.

I am hoping this is going to be recorded and available online, I assume it will be, but am hoping to confirm. Wow, that is going to be a conversation. This is a very often discussed book about the problems of hockey culture. Picking her to interview him is really interesting. (In my experience 'in conversation with' means the second person is basically doing an interview, and has been picked for being someone very well informed/related to a topic as opposed to being picked for interviewing skills)

(This and the writing post were all going to be one post, but then I had so many Oasis things to say...)

+ LOL Noel won Songwriter of the Year at the Brit Awards for 2025, the first year in probably twenty or so when he did not release a single song. The Brit Awards also happen to be in Manchester this year. Did they give Noel the award to get him to Manchester? Did they put the awards in Manchester because they already planned to give him the award (since it clearly didn't depend on any work he actually produced last year)?

And most importantly: Is Liam going? His answer has varied, but the most recent one seems to be yes. In any case he definitely approves.

+ And they're definitely still talking. :') Here's Noel calling into his favorite sports show.

Noel: Our…our…our kid thinks we’re still.. Our kid thinks we’re gonna win the quad.

Andy: Honestly hand on heart, he does?

Noel: Well, that’s what he was telling me last night.

(And he says he's in the studio!!!!!)

+ Speaking of Noel in the studio, here's what Liam had to say about that. Don't tease us Liam!!

+ One last Liam tweet to send you off. ;____;

+ In a fit of optimism, I signed up to finish one of my Oasis WIPs for [community profile] crackthewip.

+ I also managed to write a thing for Bulletproof. Granted I wrote most of it at the end of December, so it doesn't even count as this year's writing, but I'm glad to have maintained my Bulletproof streak.

+ Anyway, NO MORE EXCHANGE SIGNUPS. I mean it this time. >:(

Dear Father, it has been a month since my last confession.

I am so tired, y'all. I've been working overtime for the past three weeks trying to stash some money away for the inevitable basement bullshit and it's been exhausting. (You wouldn't think a job that requires sitting at a desk would be tiring, but I feel like somebody threw sand in my eyes by the end of the day.)

Permit-wrangler is still trying to find an engineer. Apparently the problem is that I can't just dig a hole and have an engineer look at it and yes the foundations are good, they have to figure out how to reverse-engineer whatever was done to create new drawings - and that's going to be expensive regardless.

I sicc'd permit-wrangler on the engineer who got the original permits. "Tell him if he helps me out I might leave him out of the lawsuit."

***

I looked out my window this morning and there was a huge raptor in the trees behind my house. Couldn't get a clear enough view to make a guess at what it was but at least twice the size of the red-tail hawks I normally see back there.

I reiterated to the venerable Lord Brock that no, he is not going outside no matter how much he bonks his head on the window. (He is enormously offended by the squirrels.)

***

Last time I visited my dad I took my laptop over and started quizzing him about family. His memory is shot, but he does remember incidents from his childhood. What's hilarious is that he remembers the kids who pissed him off - I suggested one possible connection and he was all, "Oh yeah, Joey, he visited from the States. What a little prick."

He also remembered the aunt who baked cookies and the heavy-drinking aunt who was a huge bruiser and all the men were afraid of her. So if they left an impression he had me stories about them, even if he doesn't remember how they're related to him.

***

Somebody here was talking about how Skip The Dishes made up a new address for them, and it reminded me that I had the exact experience last time I ordered from them. The system sent the driver to an address a couple of blocks away and I only caught it because I got the ping that the order was five minutes away and when I looked at the map I didn't recognize the streets.

Calling their customer service did nothing because the driver was already showing as "arrived". But as soon as I hung up I got a call from the driver because the address they had given him was a park, so I was able to redirect him and get my food after all.

***

We have reached the part of the winter where I start to worry that I have run out of places to put snow. My yard is maybe five feet square and the snow is already piled up in a pyramid.

I keep wanting to go out with a hose and ice it up and build an igloo or something.

Scrappy Youngling: Overheard

Chopper had proven able to mostly work with Arseven, once they got back to the real ship that Fulcrum usually worked from. The sound of the two droids razzing each other became quite common, but Hera knew Chopper loved having another droid to talk to.

So did Arseven, who was one of those that had never been memory wiped.

Hera knew both of her new friends were veterans of the war, and it sometimes worried her because she'd seen the holonet. She knew what the soldiers had done… and if Fulcrum had been at Ryloth, that meant Fulcrum was one of the Jedi.

"He's safe," Fulcrum said, after Leverage had headed to the back of the ship to help the droids with maintenance.

"Did you read my mind?"

"No, your lekku language is not that far from mine." Fulcrum smiled. "Leverage saved me, when things happened. Now, we help others resist the Empire, and steal our men back as we can, because it wasn't their choice."

"How can someone do that without choosing it?" Hera asked.

"By using a chip to control them." Fulcrum stood to go lend a hand, and indicated the instrument display. "Keep an eye on the board, and call back if something changes badly.

"You need to get used to it all if you're going to be our pilot."

Hera's eyes went very large, as she realized Fulcrum meant those words. "I'm going to be the best pilot I can be!"

"I have faith in that, my young friend."

"You know she's Syndulla's biter," Leverage was saying, and Hera froze where she was, rather than get any closer.

"And? I didn't set out to recruit her; she made her own choices. He's never going to look off of Ryloth for his efforts. I don't have to worry about offending him."

Hera's heart hammered to hear Fulcrum say what she felt, and that the woman knew!

"Alright, 'Soka. You will do what you think is best. Still think she's young to make this kind of choice. It's not like when we were younger."

"No, it's worse. And we need strong-willed young minds willing to pick up the fight, keep it strong. I believe in her, and will teach her all I can."

Hera felt the belief and promise in those words. She very carefully took herself back to the cockpit, and vowed to never let Fulcrum down.

A few random health and surgery things I forgot to mention in the longer write-up:
- I really had absolutely zero suspicion that it was appendicitis. The one thing I remember hearing about it, sometime back when I was a kid, was that it is impossibly, excruciatingly painful. That you can't function if your appendix bursts. Something about being unable to stand on one foot, or unable to jump because of the pain? I don't know how much of that is "old wives tale" vs. "typical of most people, just not all" but while this was definitely painful, it didn't strike me as debilitatingly so. Occasionally the pain would spike to what I'd call a 9/10, but that would fade back to a 5/10 after about twenty seconds, which is firmly in the "I've worked through worse" category.
- Related to the above, I've had and worked through menstrual cramps that were more painful. I've *seen* studies talking about this very thing, but because of that, I just sort of assumed "well, this can't be anything too serious, then."
- They had a really hard time getting blood samples from me. My veins just... retreated. When they did get blood, it kept clotting before they could do the tests they wanted it for, so they put me on a blood thinner for a few days. The bruises from some of the blood draw sites *just* disappeared fully as of today.
- I am *really, really* glad that the surgeons took a second look at the CT scans and decided to operate. The initial CT analysis (I don't know if this was a CT tech's read of it or an automated analysis) gave such vague and inconclusive results. Which isn't wrong, per se; apparently my guts were just trashed, ha. But if the surgeons hadn't taken that additional look, hadn't determined that even though the CT listed appendicitis as a "secondary" concern, it really looked like it might be appendicitis that needed treatment... things could have been pretty bad for me. I already wonder how long it'd been having issues, for it to have already perforated, abscessed, gone gangrenous. Was two days (Friday night onset of symptoms until Sunday night surgery) really long enough for it to have gotten that bad? Waiting longer would have likely pushed me toward the sepsis stage, and I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that.

Last week I did get my expected denial of leave from the state, which my HR department appealed. Today I got the notice from the state that my application has finally been fully submitted, and that they have all required information. So NOW it can finally be reviewed. Good thing I don't, you know, have rent or bills or anything!

Speaking of bills... For as much as I've complained about my insurance, they really did cover the vast majority of my stay, which is a huge relief. I didn't know what sort of bill I was going to get stuck with. The total for my time at the hospital ended up being nearly $100,000. It was more than $96,000, and my insurance paid over $89,500 of it. I owe around $6500. That is still a lot of money for me, and certainly not pocket change that I have lying around, but it's certainly not as life-ruining as $100000 would be.
(Also granted, some of that is the hospital upcharge. Each tylenol pill was $3.50. Each bag of IV fluid was $90. Each day of "room and board" was over $3000. Surgery and anesthesia were billed for one 15 minute block and then per minute, which tells me the surgery itself took an hour and 16 minutes.)
I may still owe another $1700 for the anesthesia, which has been billed, but my insurance has not responded to.
Apparently my urgent care appointment cost $390, despite it literally being five minutes of poking me in the stomach and telling me to go to the ER. I paid $50 to be seen, and my insurance paid $140, so I still owe them $100, too.
Of course, I'm going to have to apparently go to the fucking hospital again to give them money, because when I try to make a payment on their handy website, it just gives me an error and tells me to speak to customer service... which there is no contact info for anywhere that I can find on the website.

I returned to work last Friday, which was really just a chance to catch up on everything that happened while I was gone. (My manager and our lead instructor apparently got into it, and got a divorce no longer feel able to work with each other. My company made the absolute worst knee-jerk decision regarding a "solution," which has left everyone angry and resentful. My manager was responsible for two locations, so they took her second location away and gave it to the lead... even though he has had zero training and has zero idea how to do any of the office work that a center requires. There is no other staff up there. Manager is angry and resentful that her center was taken away; Lead is angry and resentful that it feels like he was thrown into the deep end with no training. They both think the other is getting rewarded.)

I can't say I feel fully ready to be back to work (and judging by some stupid mistakes I made, my brain isn't 100% back in the game,) but for the most part it's okay, and I'm definitely far, far readier than I would have been the week before. I was definitely not ready for a 10-hour day on Sunday, but it is what it is.

Yesterday I felt pretty good, and got together with Taylor for a good chunk of the day. We watched a movie and read and it was nice. I managed without falling asleep in the middle.

Today... all I really did was sleep. I woke up at 7:00 and fell back asleep until nearly 10. Two hours later, I was ready to go back to sleep, and dozed on and off for hours more. This feels like a stupid backslide.

Otherwise, healing seems to be going fine. The first and third incisions are healing really well. The middle one (in my bellybutton) hurts, but I think it's because the scab cracked, and the sharp edges dig into the tender stuff underneath depending on how I moved. It doesn't look bad, just hurts a little. I've been able to manage without the lidocaine patches for a couple days now, which is good.
Still a bit bloated, and haven't had a chance to go on walks the last couple days, but it's definitely better than before.
Food is still sitting fine. My guts are see-sawing back and forth between extremes of how they'd like to misbehave, but things are still moving through the tubes, which is all I can really ask for.

Alex is sick. :( Some sort of head and chest thing. Sounds similar to what I had back in 2024, which lingered for months. I hope this one passes faster, but it's a nasty cough. He had a fever for a while, but that passed. Miserable. I also really hope that I don't get his crud. I've been through enough, lol.

...and as I'm writing this post, our kitchen ceiling just started leaking. Guessing the upstairs neighbor's dishwasher or something. Super! Time to go deal with that!

The leak is made all the stranger because during my hours of dozing, I dreamed there was a leak in the ceiling next to my bed. It was a brief snippet of the dream, but still, bizarre.

ETA: Ceiling leak addressed. Kids in the apartment upstairs flooded their bathroom. Better result than it could have been! Emergency maintenance came by, and cut away a few bits of drywall to try and make sure that it dries out. They'll check again tomorrow.
