Association Meme, Round Two

The lovely and talented
rainjoyous gave me three association prompts:
1. FMA
Where to start? Thanks to the awesome
ciceqi's fanfiction, I had dabbled in FMA fandom before I ever got my hands on the canon. So I knew, going in, that I would almost certainly like it; alchemy, child soldiers, and political intrigue are all pretty firmly on the list of "themes/tropes I cannot resist". Unless it was just hideously animated, or the plot had lake-sized holes in it or something, it was going to be an interesting show.
And then it blew me away. Edward's expressions, and Alphonse's ability to go on being an insanely cute little boy while also being six foot tall and made of LOOMING, and Roy's charming mix of self-absorbed adolescent and calculating officer, and a government secretly commanded by the enemy, and a war of difficult morality in the past that still affects the "present" in many ways, and then THE ENDING ACK ACK ACK. I knew it would come to that -- all right, feared it would come to that -- and it did, and it was amazing even while I feared for Alphonse being left alone.
Then I watched the movie and then had to call my friend during the end credits and scream, because I could not believe, could not believe it had ended like that. It wasn't supposed to end like that. The idea of an Ed without alchemy is like... it makes the loss of limbs look negligible. And Winry and Roy left behind, again. And all for nothing, because we already know that, no, the bomb was not stopped, so it's going to be one more failure, one more weight on Ed's soul that he blames himself for, and it's going to mean thousands of deaths on his conscience, when he has enough trouble when it's just Al, just a body and not souls too...
I cannot watch the movie again. I have most of a fic in my head, where they come back and things are fixed insofar as possible, and I cannot write it because I would have to watch the movie again to check my facts, and I can't bring myself to do it.
I love FMA with a deep and unreasonable love. It's also a bit unusual in that I love nearly all of the characters! Al, Ed, Roy, Hawkeye, Winry, Kimberly and Archer (uh, from a safe distance, preferably from within a shielded bunker with a locked door). The villains were interesting (Tucker, Scar, Dante & Hoenheim, not so much the homunculi by themselves), and layered, and had reason behind their actions; the heroes weren't perfect and they sometimes made bad decisions and sometimes made wrong decisions and they still picked themselves up and kept on going. I just. Agh. Name a character, and I could write an entry all about how that character is awesome in particular ways. Trying to fit them all inside one general-overview sort of answer is impossible.
2. Well-thought-through comments
...I try?
I do try, though I often feel like I don't succeed; especially with you, because "Closer" (and "Padam", and "Pieces", and "Ink", and...) tends to reduce me to gibbering speechlessness on a regular basis. :D I'm glad to hear that at least some sense manages to get through. :D I always thought that, if I wrote something, I'd love to get comments from people who not only enjoyed but thought about my writing, so I try to give that sort of comment. (I have a degree in English! I can't read something and not think about it! I practically write papers in my sleep.)
3. Snakes
I love snakes! For something with no limbs at all, they're amazingly successful. :D I own one, and one day, space and money permitting, will own more. They come in the most amazing colours (how many blue-and-red-with-black-checkers mammals can you name?), and they're easy to keep, and they only have to be fed once a week (and cleaned up after, likewise), and they've been around for aeons.
I don't actually have any particular affinity for the fer-de-lance; I chose it as a username at a time when I didn't know it was going to become my main fandom identity. It was chosen because it made a good name (can be shortened or abbreviated), is in a language RL friends don't associate with me, and was available. Nonetheless it's served me well. :D I use my default icon all the time because I drew it and am insanely proud of how well it turned out; generally I am FAIL at combined-drawing-and-colouring.
Most of the snake species I like best are nonvenomous, actually, but my favourite venomous species is probably the copperhead. Such beautiful markings! And those eyes! Though boomslangs are gorgeous, too; I'm extremely partial to green and blue.
I guess I should do that "ask me anything" meme next, so you can have more things to associate me with. *grins*
