To talk of scary things.

For years -- as long as I've had this journal, I believe, and the journal before this one, too -- I have said that I did not want or intend to lock my posts.

The "do not want" part, at least, still holds true. But I must admit that LiveJournal's new "decency policies" have me very, very worried. To quote from an excellent summary by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic:

Fiction will also be subject to the two-strikes policy; you will not be immediately suspended if your fic is determined to violate LJ policy, but you will be asked to remove it by a specified date. There will be an appeals process for this as well. (Said appeals process has yet to be clarified.)

This policy is retroactive, so if you have something you know violates the policy, you should remove it.

Links to prohibited content offsite will still be subject to this policy. (Question I asked which remains unanswered: What about linking to an author or artist personal website that may contain underage art/fics? LJ provides the ability to link your personal website on your userinfo page, for example. Should artists and authors stop using that?)

Since I don't post explicit fiction in this journal, I've generally felt safe enough making recs. Now, though, it seems very clear that LJ is preparing to attack even links to "indecent" material, which has me very nervous indeed. Locking every rec above a G rating is starting to look more sensible than paranoid, even though everything in me rebels at the thought.

I will definitely start transferring my recs to my new backup journals in the next few days. Once that's done, I'm going to have to start seriously thinking about locking the recs here; hopefully some new information will have come up in the meantime, the better to judge the risks.

I've deleted a few choice posts, but otherwise I intent to continue reccing - if they want to suspend me, then fuck them, I have IJ.

This is true!

Thankfully I don't think I will have to delete anything, since I am a wimp apparently not reccing at the 12-year-old-Weasleys-incest-fic level, where the heavy fire seems to be concentrated. I can't even, offhand, think of anything I "need" to lock -- I know there's at least one story in my recs that contains child abuse, but it's not smutty child abuse; and there's at least one possibly-underage-Harry-with-teacher, which might be a little chancier.

Really, though, I'm just phenomenally lazy :D and don't want to have to go picking over everything trying to imagine whether it could possibly get the Abuse team's knickers in a twist. I hate locked posts, they seem to take away half of the point of LJ!

I agree - locked journals even more so.
