Last week,
novembermond posted with a meme to talk about three selected icons.
Here are the ones I was assigned:
An old icon! So old that I honestly have lost a lot of the details. :D I think this one dates back to when I first started using this account; I needed some icons and figured that my limited icon-making skills would probably be better off if I ran with the snake theme than if I tried to make fannish icons. The snake in it came from a Google image search, most likely, and I just trimmed it down to fit. This is/was my "humourous post" icon, because to me the snake looks like it's laughing, or smiling.
A new icon! Very new; I made it on 1/2/19. :D I'd been watching and posting about Nirvana in Fire, and really wanted an icon to go with those posts! Again, I don't actually have icon-making skills, so this is really intended to be a placeholder until I find some nice professional ones. It's just a screenshot of the NiF episode page on Viki, cut down and slightly resized. I like both characters, I like blue, and the lack of background detail meant iconifying it was near my skill level... though I think it still took me half an hour to get it cropped just right. :/
Another new icon! But it's a new icon about being an old fan. :D It was made by
china_shop, and I saw it in this icon post along with a number of other old!fan icons. It reminded me of LJ and the way people always had some new fashion to complain about: Why are all the icons full of tiny text nowadays? and People, please stop with the eye-searing custom colours! or What's with all these desaturated pastel icons lately?
I am not quite 40, but I have been in fandom since about 1997 (okay, I chose that date almost at random, because trying to define "in fandom" would be a huge post in itself) and find myself a little nostalgic now and then about the ways it changes and the ways it doesn't.
If you would like me to pick three of your icons for this meme, comment with "Pick me!" Or just comment and tell me about your favourite icon, yours or mine. :D

Date: 2019-01-20 04:23 am (UTC)This was the first one I made, back when I was running a Foreigner Readalong for some friends and desperately needed a relevant icon. I really love the mecheiti scene, because it's one of those scenes that really captures Bren's experience as both a fish-out-of-water, and as a human in an unprecedented close contact with atevi culture. On the meta level, it's an image of unpredictable journeys, which is very much how getting into this canon feels, not to mention running my first readalong.
This one was made shortly thereafter, because I started running a 'spoiler version' of the Readalong and wanted a different icon for those posts. Bren's security staff seemed suitable for a marker of 'watch your step, here be spoilers' content. Plus it's from my absolute favourite book cover, the one with the fabulous stained-glass window! I'm not exaggerating when I say that if I were rich, I'd absolutely hire someone to make that window and put it in my house; it's one of the loveliest pieces of cover art I've seen for any novel. If there was a poster, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I've praised your Valor icon before (good Kerr, best Sergeant!) but it's extra-delightful today, because just yesterday I was idly rereading fic. The series is in the back of my mind, because right now I have the second Peace book (the Valor side series) in my to-read pile, but not the first and I don't want to start with the second! I need my local used bookstore to oblige me by coughing up a copy of the first one, or else I just need to bite the bullet and go online, but my To Be Read pile is so tall it's hard to justify buying another book right now...
I really, really want more Torin, though!
And less Craig, unless he's far away from Torin hanging out with his platonic furry girlfriend.no subject
Date: 2019-01-20 05:18 am (UTC)oh, the Peace series is so good. I have read the first two but not the one that came out last year, and this might be the kick in the tail that I need to go grab it from the library. :g: It's super great to see more of the Krai (I love love love the worldbuilding details of their culture!) with Ressk and Werst both being present, and Mashona is such a badass. I love her.
Also yes! I've never been a fan of Craig in general, and the romance storyline didn't help, though I did appreciate that Torin is still such a strong force on her own, there was no love triangle, and having him basically run backup / support is a nice change from the more traditional "strong man goes out while woman is healer / getaway driver / coordinator" setup.
(also this Valor fic was written for me a while ago and I love it so much. It's such a... comfortable fic and I keep coming back to it. If you haven't read it I would definitely recommend it, though I think it might have some vague spoilers for the Peace books.)
