GUESS WHO HAS INTERNET?
Oct. 16th, 2017 11:15 pmTHIS FANGIRL!!
I am so pleased. My relationship with my laptop has been saved. Not to mention my relationship with DW, AO3, DragCave, online banking, and anything else requiring a login!
Rejoice with me by telling me what you've been up to lately. :D

Date: 2017-10-17 06:24 pm (UTC)Here is a ridiculous life update from me:I am getting deeper and deeper with the Quaker Girl, my main squeeze. Every step feels healthy. We are careful. I think we are getting married. It will be a big, lovely party. I also still seem to be dating that asshole known as the Intern. We have an understanding of sorts. I have been dating/sleeping with a male exotic dancer who is way the fuck out of my league, but I do not question.
I hit 2 months sober on the 21st...then fucked up and had a drink during the hurricane party at the hostel where I work last weekend. But I didn't get blitzed or black out so progress...?
My classes continue apace. I'm doing better this semester with time management and content.
I tried working a day job at the university dining services, but it was a slow-motion trainwreck that was just fucking killing me. I was headed for a hospital stay. I quit that. I am currently discerning how to do management with my classes.
The Quaker Girl is applying for jobs in New Orleans in earnest, and this feels okay. She met my parents (both) last week and one of my brothers. She is joining me for Christmas. I am joining her for a family holiday.
I am trying to be healthy emotionally. It's a work in progress. In this case, it meant giving up money so I can do things like ride my bike, go to the gym, knit, and sleep in a bed.

Date: 2017-10-17 09:19 pm (UTC)HELLO I HAVE BEEN AWAY A LOT HAS HAPPENED, IN ADDITION TO INTERNET I HAVE A HOUSE NOW AND ALSO TWO CATS. SOON I WILL HAVE NEW FLOORS. :D
Congrats on the dating, and the sobriety progress!
Sleeping in a bed is good, and I heartily endorse giving up money for that cause. :D And I feel you about the job thing - I really need to find a new one myself, because it's definitely not doing me any favours in terms of pay OR in health. But floors first.
Good luck to the Quaker Girl in her New Orleans jobsearch!

Date: 2017-10-23 04:16 am (UTC)Every year I say to myself that I'm going to do Yuletide... and then every year it sneaks up on me and I'm not ready. I enjoyed it the two times I did it! It just seems to start so early every year, I'm inevitably busy with other things and unprepared to jump into 'Christmas stuff.'
I also feel like the fandoms have become a lot tinier and more obscure, which is disheartening for me. But that could be observer bias.

Date: 2017-10-23 02:32 pm (UTC)Machineries of Empire is a trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee, with two books out (Ninefox Gambit and Raven Stratagem). It's space opera with milSF elements in the vein of Ancillary Justice. The main character, Kel Cheris, is a mathematician, and the combat functions on essentially mathemagics – but for all of that (plus their FTL) to work, they need to maintain "the calendar" by things like ritual tortures and feast days. Book 1 is about Cheris dealing with people trying to disrupt the calendar.
Yuletide's been quite early the past few years – I'm enough of an internet addict to be able to check, but some friends report setting alarms for October. Fandoms have a tendency of growing larger, so what once was small is now large and not eligible for Yuletide. (Most SF books are small enough to stay eligible almost forever, though – Vorkosigan is only now starting to get too large.) Then there's also the five-minute fandoms – artworks, anthropomorfic, songs, etc – which are another Yuletide tradition for some participants.
