well, technically no. the same way you techincally don't need to read act 1 or the troll arc. *shrug* of course I'm biased, since the intermission was one of my fav parts. :p I like seeing the different versions of the midnight crew, and the characters who survive the intermission are going to show up later on. also I find it helpful to keep track of the different Jacks. It helps me minimize my own confusion. I'd rather speed through it than not read it. people who read it and found it boring will tell you to skip it. it's a matter of personal taste, really. oh good look at that comment. it keeps on growing. apparently I got feelings on this.
I'm blaming this post on sleep deprivation. :D I did read it, albeit with some skimming of the time-shenanigan explanations; and was rewarded by the little screen of Karkat at the end. Plus, as you note, the concept of there being different Jacks.
Conclusion: sleep deprivation. And/or not being in the mood for quite that much graphic carnage. Overall definitely worth speedreading rather than skipping.
