In a post about icons and icon usage on DW, melannen commented,

(That is also something I've noted with icons: people tend to be really bad at realizing what other people see when they look at them, sometimes because you need to know the fandom, sometimes you just need to know context that was cropped out of the shot. There used to be a meme that went around every so often that was like "explain your friends' default icon" and there were always surprises!

So there you go: Comment with your interpretation of my default icon! What am I saying about myself that I might not know? (No cheating by looking at the description!)

It's a snek! Possibly a krait, but I don't know what those look like.

It is indeed a krait! Points for you. :D

More specifically, it's a sea krait; there are half-a-dozen species or so. They are not related to the common krait (see this icon) but share a name because... ~waves hands~

It's a snake swimming in the water? It seems like a friendly sort of icon to me -- the snake seems relaxed and curious.

I know it's a sea krait, and it looks to be swimming happily in the sea, satisfied with life.

I guess it's cheating that I remember the origin story of your icon *g* mostly I tend to just see "stripy wiggly snake" and know "ah yes, it's krait". Upon current closer inspection I also see the background seems to be a body of water of some description, and there's also plants. And I remember that it's a krait because that's you. But mostly on a day-to-day basis it's just "wiggly snake"!

I don't know if I can give you any other interpretation - we've been mutuals for so long (even with little interaction) that I'll always think of you as a lover of snakes somewhat dangerous.

Unless Rudyard Kipling steered me wrong with "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," krait is a small very poisonous snake. Yours is more stripy than I expected, and also apparently aquatic. So maybe you want to reassure your readers that you're not as dangerous as you seem?

Hee, another one who remembers the origin! It's always fun when people do know the story - because of course I do, but it's hard to keep track of when friends come in and fade out of one's fandoms, so finding out that there are people who see my icon and remember its birth is neat. <3

Kipling... didn't exactly steer you wrong? He just wasn't on the correct continent to provide driving instructions for this icon. :D The common krait is found in India, the sea kraits in S/SE Asia. I do have an icon featuring the common krait, i.e. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi's nemesis; see icon!

Much as I love Kipling, my default is a sea krait because I really, really, really love blue animals. :D

It's a snake in water. It's swimming alone - it's not eating something, it's not being eaten, it's just doing its thing. So I interpret it as "this is a normal entry, this is just business as usual". (Am I close?? Also feel free to interpret my default icon, which I have used on this comment!)

Mostly I'm just really bad at remembering that icons can be changed, so I use default for everything - but since this is a fannish blog, most of that 'everything' is indeed business as usual. :D


I know a little bit about your icon because it's come up in other memes/posts, so my interpretation is a little more informed, but since I am not all that deep when it comes to icons, "it's the toothy jellyfish thing from that videogame" is my usual reaction. Having discussed it (and seeing you use it a lot?), I mostly recognise it as a regular sight on my reading page.

It does look like some of the creatures popular in monster hentai manga, though, which occasionally makes me double-take and glance again at the username. :D
