...the AO3 has stats?

Whoa!

Poking around my AO3 page on my leisurely way to seeing how much stuff I have "Marked for Later", I noticed a link called "Statistics", and clicked on it out of idle curiosity.

There were graphs! Hit counts! Gross word counts! Subscription counts, which I'd been wondering about yesterday! Seven different sorting methods!

Almost as amazing as the total word count feature (where has this been all my life, it is awesome!) is the fact that I have 11 bookmarkers! I thought I had one; seeing "11" in that field rather boggled me. o.O

While I'm sure most of my reading list is unimpressed by 11 as a bookmark count (fair; I've got fics bookmarked that have twice as many bookmarkers!), I am going to carry on feeling delighted regardless. It was "1" for so long that I forgot to notice the word, so this barrelled me over.

(Tomorrow: check out the one or two people who have bookmarked two of my fics, because given my stuff's almost-total tiny-fandom sources, they must be awesome people and might lead me to more fic in underappreciated fandoms!

Funniest of all, though, is that I have absolutely no memory of ever having seen the "Statistics" tab before. Did they just put that up? How long have I been oblivious?

I keep staring at my word count and feeling a slow tidal rise of glee. Look at this:

That makes me feel so much more productive, I can't even express it. 15,000 words! That is a respectable heap of words, even if it boils down to a handful of sonnets and some ficlets whose largest members top out around 2,000 words each.

...Help, I'm suddenly starting to consider unwisely ambitious goals for the rest of 2012...

*Deep sigh of relief* I genuinely suspected it had been there all along and I'd just never noticed! That's the sort of thing I do. :D

Now I have a word count and don't have to add them up manually!

Though admittedly I only have half a dozen fics up there, so there's only so many minutes you can poke at the stats for them.

Heh, yep. :D I have 13 works, four of which are just sonnets (in an old fandom, at that; so they never get any views), so there are not hugely exciting things to be discovered beyond the basics.

If I had twenty or thirty fics, I could see that it would be a lot of fun to look for patterns in the different "rank by" options -- does one fandom get a lot of kudos but no comments, while another gets lots of comments but relatively few hits? And so on.

I'm still trying to figure out how to parse the info, though. Like, what's the "subscriptions" as opposed to "author subscriptions"? Because I've got some author subscriptions, but no "subscriptions", so I'm not sure what that means. And what exactly are "bookmarkers" bookmarking? My profile? Stories? If that's total bookmarks on individual stories, does that mean both the regular and "rec" type of bookmarks, since AO3 has two types?

(And, er, I looked at my gross word count after you pointed out that it existed, and was shocked that it was so low. "Only a bit over one million? Really?" :P I'd thought I was more tl;dr than that.)

If "Author subscriptions" are a separate thing, then "Subscriptions" must be the number of people who have subscribed to just a particular story. (All unfinished stories, and series, have a "Subscribe" button.)

Bookmarkers would be people who are bookmarking stories or series, I think. (Don't think it's possible to bookmark authors; must check.) Presumably it's total bookmarks, since mine lists 11 and the highest I have on any single story is 3. If I were guessing I'd say yes, that's recs+bookmarks (but not private bookmarks?), but short of setting up an experiment with another archive user where we temporarily bookmarked, removed, and then recced each other's things, I can't be certain...

ONE MILLION IS AN AWESOME WORDCOUNT, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! *high fives* That's, like, 67% more words than I have!

With subscriptions, yeah, that's the only thing I can figure, but it would be nice if they were a little clearer about it. I remember when I first saw that stat, I was like ".... :(" because I know I've got something like 100 people who have me on Author Alert on ff.net, and I was expecting maybe a few at AO3... And then I noticed "author subscriptions" above and at least that was more what I expected (nowhere near 100, hahah, but indeed, more than 0).

And eh, the word count totally confused me at first, because there were no commas, and I was like "What do you MEAN my total word count is a little over a hundred thousand? I've got one fic that's over 100,000 all on its own, and multiple others over 50,000... oh wait. *painstakingly counts tiny digits* ...Hmm. Well, better..." But I've been writing fic for like 15 years, and most of the stuff that's been written at least within the last 10 (which wasn't a silly commentboxed fill for a meme) is uploaded there. I thought I was longer-winded than that. ;)
