Icon meme
Last week,
novembermond posted with a meme to talk about three selected icons.
Here are the ones I was assigned:
An old icon! So old that I honestly have lost a lot of the details. :D I think this one dates back to when I first started using this account; I needed some icons and figured that my limited icon-making skills would probably be better off if I ran with the snake theme than if I tried to make fannish icons. The snake in it came from a Google image search, most likely, and I just trimmed it down to fit. This is/was my "humourous post" icon, because to me the snake looks like it's laughing, or smiling.
A new icon! Very new; I made it on 1/2/19. :D I'd been watching and posting about Nirvana in Fire, and really wanted an icon to go with those posts! Again, I don't actually have icon-making skills, so this is really intended to be a placeholder until I find some nice professional ones. It's just a screenshot of the NiF episode page on Viki, cut down and slightly resized. I like both characters, I like blue, and the lack of background detail meant iconifying it was near my skill level... though I think it still took me half an hour to get it cropped just right. :/
Another new icon! But it's a new icon about being an old fan. :D It was made by
china_shop, and I saw it in this icon post along with a number of other old!fan icons. It reminded me of LJ and the way people always had some new fashion to complain about: Why are all the icons full of tiny text nowadays? and People, please stop with the eye-searing custom colours! or What's with all these desaturated pastel icons lately?
I am not quite 40, but I have been in fandom since about 1997 (okay, I chose that date almost at random, because trying to define "in fandom" would be a huge post in itself) and find myself a little nostalgic now and then about the ways it changes and the ways it doesn't.
If you would like me to pick three of your icons for this meme, comment with "Pick me!" Or just comment and tell me about your favourite icon, yours or mine. :D

Oh, why not? Pick me, if you'd like to!

My default icon is a lovely art of Adrian Hollice, a minor character from Tanya Huff's Valor novels, that I commissioned my friend Mel to draw. (I believe she still has commissions open right now too.)

This was the first one I made, back when I was running a Foreigner Readalong for some friends and desperately needed a relevant icon. I really love the mecheiti scene, because it's one of those scenes that really captures Bren's experience as both a fish-out-of-water, and as a human in an unprecedented close contact with atevi culture. On the meta level, it's an image of unpredictable journeys, which is very much how getting into this canon feels, not to mention running my first readalong.
This one was made shortly thereafter, because I started running a 'spoiler version' of the Readalong and wanted a different icon for those posts. Bren's security staff seemed suitable for a marker of 'watch your step, here be spoilers' content. Plus it's from my absolute favourite book cover, the one with the fabulous stained-glass window! I'm not exaggerating when I say that if I were rich, I'd absolutely hire someone to make that window and put it in my house; it's one of the loveliest pieces of cover art I've seen for any novel. If there was a poster, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I've praised your Valor icon before (good Kerr, best Sergeant!) but it's extra-delightful today, because just yesterday I was idly rereading fic. The series is in the back of my mind, because right now I have the second Peace book (the Valor side series) in my to-read pile, but not the first and I don't want to start with the second! I need my local used bookstore to oblige me by coughing up a copy of the first one, or else I just need to bite the bullet and go online, but my To Be Read pile is so tall it's hard to justify buying another book right now...
I really, really want more Torin, though!
And less Craig, unless he's far away from Torin hanging out with his platonic furry girlfriend.no subject
oh, the Peace series is so good. I have read the first two but not the one that came out last year, and this might be the kick in the tail that I need to go grab it from the library. :g: It's super great to see more of the Krai (I love love love the worldbuilding details of their culture!) with Ressk and Werst both being present, and Mashona is such a badass. I love her.
Also yes! I've never been a fan of Craig in general, and the romance storyline didn't help, though I did appreciate that Torin is still such a strong force on her own, there was no love triangle, and having him basically run backup / support is a nice change from the more traditional "strong man goes out while woman is healer / getaway driver / coordinator" setup.
(also this Valor fic was written for me a while ago and I love it so much. It's such a... comfortable fic and I keep coming back to it. If you haven't read it I would definitely recommend it, though I think it might have some vague spoilers for the Peace books.)

Heh, this is also why most of my early icons -- and almost all of the ones I made myself -- were all of hamsters :P
I do love the snake's expression! :D
The "old fan" icon is also great! I hadn't seen that icon set but really enjoyed looking through it (although I already have an icon that serves that purpose, so I didn't snag any, the sentiments are still very relevant!)
And: (in honor of finally having gotten my DW icons in order after getting a paid account for the first time) pick me! :D

Violet is definitely one of those flavours with no direct analogue in any other food I know, so I look forward to your reaction to that one if it's new to you! Some things can only be described as being like themselves, and violet is one of them for me; I was delighted when I first got to experiment with it in tea. Eventually I'm going to make a Huge Floral Mishmash blend with every kind of flower-derived flavour I can muster up, from elderflower to violet. :D
Heh, this is also why most of my early icons -- and almost all of the ones I made myself -- were all of hamsters :P
Haha, so you know the feeling! :D Icons were never a huge thing for me even on LJ; like now, I probably had 10-30 and overwhelmingly used my default, so I never developed the skills for making them. And it used to be such a big element of fandom that one could easily find a dozen icon-making comms to pull great selections from, so it was no big deal! Now that journal-based fandom is smaller, and so many of my fandoms are Old Old Fandoms, it's a lot harder to find quality icons that are fandom-specific.
I love the old-fan icon post; and the fact that this makes my 'illegible layouts' icon an old icon from a new post, about being an old fan but which is new to me. :D It's so perfectly balanced!
One day I might have to make one that just says "Old!fan is old", though, since that has occasionally been a catchphrase of mine.

Also, elderflower tea, OMG! (we discovered elderflower flavored things during a trip to Austria and Poland a few years back, and it's been one of my favorite things in everything from juice to cider to liqueur, but I've definitely never seen it in tea, and that's so intriguing!)
I do love fandom icons, and most of my fandoms at this point are tiny and niche. I was lucky enough that some super-talented icon-makers shared my smallish fandoms (e.g. Vorkosigan, Babylon 5) and I managed to snag a lot of their really great icons in time. For my newer fandoms, I've had to muddle through on my own, heh.
It's so perfectly balanced!
Ha, yes! It's an ouroboros of an icon :)
(this is my "old fan" icon, btw :)

Here are three for you:
I love your Temeraire icon, by the way! And mad props on the 'good coat and a short friend' icon; is there a larger version of the art somewhere?
Also-also, the 'abyss' one with the hamster makes me think of Ursula Vernon; are you familiar with any of her works, by chance?
no subject
Ha, good eye! :D That is indeed her art, and I'm a big fan of both her artistic style and her writing. (I've read almost all of her kid books and a fair number of her stories, still need to read the self-pub novels at some point.)
Thank you for the icon picks! I shall ramble on them in the next post :D
I had to choose between my three Temeraire icons on LJ, since I really don't have reason for more than one one, and just had to go with Perscitia and Temeraire's math rivalry (she's my favorite character in the series).
And mad props on the 'good coat and a short friend' icon;
Ha, thank you! A friend I
dragged intointroduced to Dragaera thought to apply the quote to the two of them, and I knew just the art I wanted to go with it -- not that there is a lot of Dragaera art out there. This one's by Dylan Meconis, from a lineup for what would've been such an awesome comic. There used to be a page up with all the sketches, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. You can see the larger art here, and there are individual character sheets here on Flickr.no subject
Yesss, another UVernon fan on DW! *high-fives* I own the giant Digger omnibus, remember reading the original comic online before it was finished. I've also read some of her short stories, but I originally found her through artwork, and that's probably always going to be my first association; it a lasting impression on me! I have even written fic about it. :D
That character lineup is great! I don't know if I can pick a favourite, but Aliera hovering to stick her finger in Morrolan's face is perfectly in-character and a very canonical touch. Also Loiosh is super cute (as he's always telling everyone)!
no subject
Anyway, I need to go read your Bighorn Pears fic! -- but just wanted to mention that it looks like Vernon has reorganized her website and the link no longer goes to the artwork. It looks like deviantArt might be what you have to point to now (or at least I assume this is the right painting; bless Ursula for having a dedicated "weird fruit" gallery XD)
I love most of the Vlad line-up designs, even the ones where they don't match my own mental image too closely (like Cawti and Kiera; I have no mental image of Kragar -- which I suppose is fitting -- so can't say if he matches or not :P) Loiosh is super cute! -- and I like that he looks both reptilian and somewhat birdlike, especially in motion. And the body language between Morrolan and Aliera is GREAT! :D (as are Aliera's expressions in general; I love the headshot of her looking pissed).
Oh, and, posted my icon ramble :)

I... realised that I don't really have a Kragar Mental Image either! I think because Vlad doesn't, though I have a sort of Kragar Outline built on background awareness - Kragar was a Dragonlord, so he must look like a Dragonlord in the most generic sense.
Agree about Cawti and Kiera, too - I had a hard time figuring out who they were, save by process of elimination. (Is that Norathar hanging out in the back of the group?)
...Vlad needs to get some friends who aren't once-or-present Dragonlords. :/ Maybe then he'd suffer fewer rude conversations about Eastern conquest, among other effects.

Yeah, that's what I've got, too, and looks like Meconis was going off the same idea :))
I believe the line-up is Daymar, Kiera, Kragar, Vlad + Loiosh, Cawti, Morrolan, Aliera, Sethra. (How Kiera and Sethra coexist in the same picture I don't know XP)

I feel like Vlad strongly agrees with you in theory while being very bad at actually making this happen :P (Well, to be fair, I guess he keeps befriending Issola, too. But I think that one's less about friendship and more that Vlad has a type :P)

The first one definitely looks to me like a grinning snake! And it's *adorable*.
Pick me!

I was so tempted to pick the one with Kio... but I resisted, because after all I know who he is and why he's awesome. :D I'll just have to come up with a reason to post about Loveless so that you can use it!
