Icon meme

Last week, [personal profile] novembermond posted with a meme to talk about three selected icons.

Here are the ones I was assigned:

An old icon! So old that I honestly have lost a lot of the details. :D I think this one dates back to when I first started using this account; I needed some icons and figured that my limited icon-making skills would probably be better off if I ran with the snake theme than if I tried to make fannish icons. The snake in it came from a Google image search, most likely, and I just trimmed it down to fit. This is/was my "humourous post" icon, because to me the snake looks like it's laughing, or smiling.

A new icon! Very new; I made it on 1/2/19. :D I'd been watching and posting about Nirvana in Fire, and really wanted an icon to go with those posts! Again, I don't actually have icon-making skills, so this is really intended to be a placeholder until I find some nice professional ones. It's just a screenshot of the NiF episode page on Viki, cut down and slightly resized. I like both characters, I like blue, and the lack of background detail meant iconifying it was near my skill level... though I think it still took me half an hour to get it cropped just right. :/

Another new icon! But it's a new icon about being an old fan. :D It was made by [personal profile] china_shop, and I saw it in this icon post along with a number of other old!fan icons. It reminded me of LJ and the way people always had some new fashion to complain about: Why are all the icons full of tiny text nowadays? and People, please stop with the eye-searing custom colours! or What's with all these desaturated pastel icons lately?

I am not quite 40, but I have been in fandom since about 1997 (okay, I chose that date almost at random, because trying to define "in fandom" would be a huge post in itself) and find myself a little nostalgic now and then about the ways it changes and the ways it doesn't.

If you would like me to pick three of your icons for this meme, comment with "Pick me!" Or just comment and tell me about your favourite icon, yours or mine. :D

the 'abyss' one with the hamster makes me think of Ursula Vernon; are you familiar with any of her works, by chance?

Ha, good eye! :D That is indeed her art, and I'm a big fan of both her artistic style and her writing. (I've read almost all of her kid books and a fair number of her stories, still need to read the self-pub novels at some point.)

Thank you for the icon picks! I shall ramble on them in the next post :D

I had to choose between my three Temeraire icons on LJ, since I really don't have reason for more than one one, and just had to go with Perscitia and Temeraire's math rivalry (she's my favorite character in the series).

And mad props on the 'good coat and a short friend' icon;

Ha, thank you! A friend I dragged into introduced to Dragaera thought to apply the quote to the two of them, and I knew just the art I wanted to go with it -- not that there is a lot of Dragaera art out there. This one's by Dylan Meconis, from a lineup for what would've been such an awesome comic. There used to be a page up with all the sketches, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. You can see the larger art here, and there are individual character sheets here on Flickr.

I first discovered Vernon through her art, too -- I think via an LJ friend who was already a fan? I actually never read her comics (Digger or Nurk), but spotted the Danny Dragonbreath books at the library, and since my kids were in the target audience, gave them a shot. Well, all three of us liked them a lot, and at this point both I and my 17-year-old are big Hamster Princess fans (we even wrote a Yuletide fic, lol). I got to meet Vernon briefly at Worldcon last year, and she signed two Hamster Princess books for me -- one for my 7-year-old ~god-daughter and one for my 17-year-old and me :P

Anyway, I need to go read your Bighorn Pears fic! -- but just wanted to mention that it looks like Vernon has reorganized her website and the link no longer goes to the artwork. It looks like deviantArt might be what you have to point to now (or at least I assume this is the right painting; bless Ursula for having a dedicated "weird fruit" gallery XD)

I love most of the Vlad line-up designs, even the ones where they don't match my own mental image too closely (like Cawti and Kiera; I have no mental image of Kragar -- which I suppose is fitting -- so can't say if he matches or not :P) Loiosh is super cute! -- and I like that he looks both reptilian and somewhat birdlike, especially in motion. And the body language between Morrolan and Aliera is GREAT! :D (as are Aliera's expressions in general; I love the headshot of her looking pissed).

Oh, and, posted my icon ramble :)

I have now read the fic, which was wonderful, and am very glad that a random icon discussion has led me to it :D

Kragar was a Dragonlord, so he must look like a Dragonlord in the most generic sense.

Yeah, that's what I've got, too, and looks like Meconis was going off the same idea :))

I believe the line-up is Daymar, Kiera, Kragar, Vlad + Loiosh, Cawti, Morrolan, Aliera, Sethra. (How Kiera and Sethra coexist in the same picture I don't know XP)

...Vlad needs to get some friends who aren't once-or-present Dragonlords. :/ Maybe then he'd suffer fewer rude conversations about Eastern conquest, among other effects.

I feel like Vlad strongly agrees with you in theory while being very bad at actually making this happen :P (Well, to be fair, I guess he keeps befriending Issola, too. But I think that one's less about friendship and more that Vlad has a type :P)
